When we talk about collecting, we often think about objects. But what matters most, at least to me, are the relationships that form around those objects. At its best, collecting is not a transaction, it is a dialogue - a long, unfolding conversation between collector and artist, based on vision and trust.
In an age of hyper-speed auctions, speculative flipping, and market hype, it is easy to forget that behind every work is an individual taking risks. Someone uncertain. Someone trying to make sense of the world through form, texture, and metaphors. That is where patronage still matters. Not for the sake of nostalgia, but as necessity.
ModernForms was founded on this principle. From the beginning, my interest was never just buy art. I wanted to be in the room early - when the ideas were raw, unproven, and still full of uncertainty. I wanted to back the artist, not just the finished piece.
True patronage means being there before the gallery show. Before the critical acclaim. Sometimes even before the artist fully believes in their own voice. It means showing up with time, attention, and faith - offering space, resources, and, just as important, silence. Not every artist needs advice. Some simply need someone who listens without asking for confirmation.
I have had the privilege of walking alongside many artists in their early years, seeing them take shape, find rhythm, hit walls only to break through them. Some of those artists have gone on to achieve widespread recognition. Others continue to work under the radar, creating quietly powerful things. I am proud of both equally.
There is no one formula. Patronage is deeply personal. Sometimes it is about funding a studio. Sometimes acquiring a work no one else understands. And sometimes it is just sending a message after a difficult show saying: I see what you are doing - keep going.
We talk a lot about innovation and progress in business, in tech, in finance. But art is where those ideas are often tested first - intuitively, emotionally, politically. Artists don't wait for permission. They show us what's next. And that is exactly why they need room to fail, to grow, to stretch beyond what is comfortable.
If the ModernForms platform has any legacy, I hope it is the following: that we helped create space for artists to be brave. That we invested not in the certainty of the market, but in the uncertainty of potential.
And that we understood collecting not as a way of owning things, but a means of continuing the conversation.
